An artisan mouse pad costs more than most cloth pads, and nearly every guide describes it with the same words: smooth, controlled, premium. Feel is hard to turn into numbers, so this guide is narrower and more honest than most.
It covers five pads from Artisan’s Ninja FX line: the Zero, Hien, Hayate Otsu V2, Raiden and Type-99. GameVexo has not handled or tested any of them. You get a speed-and-control map built from published descriptions, a plain explanation of the hardness options, and the practical risks around import listings, stock and returns.
The Artisan Ninja FX Zero is the safest first Artisan mouse pad, because the maker describes it as a versatile, balanced-friction surface. Choose the Type-99 for maximum stopping power, the Hien or Hayate Otsu V2 for a hybrid feel, and the Raiden if glide matters most.

What makes a pad artisan
“Artisan” has no certification behind it. In this guide it means pads from Artisan, the maker of the Ninja FX range. Artisan’s own site says its pads are built from three layers: a custom-woven fabric engineered from the yarn level up, a special urethane sponge base, and an anti-slip bottom. You can read that description on Artisan’s Why Artisan page.
Two things set the range apart. First, every model is sold in more than one base hardness, so you tune feel inside one surface. Second, the fabric is designed so glide does not slow down with sweat or humidity. Artisan’s listings make that claim, and retailers describe the pads as made in Japan.
Speed, control and hybrid surfaces
Cloth pads trade glide against stopping power. A control pad helps you stop on a target, a speed pad lets the mouse travel easily, and a hybrid sits between. This page groups the five picks that way.
Hardness works the same way inside each model. A European retailer lists MID as faster and firmer, SOFT as balanced, and XSOFT as the most cushioned with the most control. Thickness follows: the Zero is 4 mm on SOFT and 3 mm on MID, according to Computer Lounge.
This is a published-class glide comparison, not a measured one.
A real glide test needs one mouse, one set of feet and a repeatable method. GameVexo has not run one, and we found no published test of these pads against a mainstream pad, so there is no glide number here. The table shows what sources do say, including the one mainstream reference we found.
| Product / Topic | Published class | Source / basis | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Type-99 | Low-speed, full control | JP Gaming (US retailer) | The strongest stopping power in this guide |
| Zero | Versatile, control-leaning; one European retailer compares it to the Zowie G-SR and SteelSeries QCK | Computer Lounge, MediaMarkt | Our closest link to a mainstream cloth pad, from retailer copy rather than a test |
| Hien | Hybrid | The Gaming Setup | More glide than the Zero |
| Hayate Otsu V2 | Hybrid; sources disagree on its position | MediaMarkt, The Gaming Setup | Treat it as a Hien alternative |
| Raiden | Fastest in the Artisan range | Esports Gear UK, JP Gaming | The pad to try for speed |
| Base hardness | MID firmer and faster; SOFT balanced; XSOFT most cushioning and control | MediaMarkt | Hardness changes feel within one model |
One US retailer warns that its speed descriptions are relative indicators among Artisan pads, and that friction can differ between the X and Y directions. Treat the classes as a way to narrow your choice, not as lab data.
The five picks
The order below reflects how widely each model suits readers, not commission or sales rank.
Artisan Ninja FX Zero
Versatile, control-leaning surface in three base hardnesses
Artisan’s own description, repeated on retailer pages such as Computer Lounge, calls the Zero a versatile pad with a balance of friction and stopping power. CCL places it with players of control-based shooters.
- Described by Artisan’s retailers as a balanced, versatile surface
- Three base hardness options
- Knit surface is described as unaffected by sweat and humidity
- Not the fastest Artisan surface
- One buying-guide review lists a texture that traps debris
Choose the Zero if you want a dependable control-leaning pad and do not want to study the whole range first. Skip it if you want the quickest glide Artisan makes.

🛒 See Artisan Ninja FX Zero on Amazon →Artisan Ninja FX Hien
Hybrid surface between speed and control
The Gaming Setup’s Artisan guide describes the Hien as a hybrid between speed and control, with more speed than the Zero for a small loss of control. The Amazon listing for the pad linked here lists a knitted polyester surface on a 4 mm foam middle layer.
The link on this page goes to the Large SOFT Black version. Check the size on the Amazon page if you need XL.
- Hybrid feel for players between the Zero and Raiden
- Amazon text says glide is not slowed by sweat or humidity
- SOFT base is 4 mm thick
- Linked listing is Large, not XL
- Several Hien Amazon listings are Japan imports with inconsistent titles
The Hien suits players who find the Zero too grippy but do not want a speed pad. Check the listing carefully, because Artisan variants are easy to mix up.
🔗 Pairs well with: best ergonomic mouse pad: wrist support that works
🛒 See Artisan Ninja FX Hien on Amazon →Artisan Ninja FX Hayate Otsu V2
Hybrid surface listed in SOFT and XSOFT
A European retailer listing for the Hayate Otsu V2 says it is faster than the Zero but slower than the Hien. The Gaming Setup says it is quicker than both. Both sources agree on one point: it is a hybrid.
- Balanced speed and control according to retailers
- Several base options
- Published sources disagree on where it sits against the Hien
- Amazon listings for this model are inconsistent in naming
Pick the Otsu V2 if you want a hybrid and prefer its surface to the Hien’s. If you want clear guidance on speed placement, the Hien or Raiden are easier to reason about.

Described as the fastest pad in Artisan’s lineup
Esports Gear UK calls the Raiden the fastest pad in Artisan’s lineup. The US retailer JP Gaming describes a high-density thin-yarn surface and a speed-type cloth feel for flicks and quick aim adjustments.
- Described as the fastest Artisan surface
- Suited to flick-heavy aiming according to retailers
- Less stopping power than the Zero or Type-99 by class
- Speed claims are not measured
Pick the Raiden if speed is the point and you already know cloth pads suit you. If you want a firm stop, look at the Type-99 or Zero.
🔗 Pairs well with: best full-desk mouse pad: xl and xxl picks
🛒 See Artisan Ninja FX Raiden on Amazon →Artisan Ninja FX Type-99
Low-speed, full-control surface
JP Gaming, an Artisan retailer in the US, describes the Type-99 as a low-speed pad for low-sensitivity players who want maximum stopping power. Its page also describes a water-absorbing, quick-drying fiber combined with twisted yarn, aimed at keeping glide steady in humid conditions.
- Described as extremely high stopping power
- Fiber is designed to resist sweat and humidity effects
- Four sizes available
- Slow by design, so a poor match for fast flicking
- Amazon variant needs checking against the size and base you want
Choose the Type-99 if you aim with your whole arm at low sensitivity and want to stop precisely. Do not pick it if you want glide.
🔗 Pairs well with: best ergonomic mouse pad: wrist support that works
🛒 See Artisan Ninja FX Type-99 on Amazon →Break-in period: what is documented
We found no manufacturer statement that gives a break-in time for any of these pads. What exists is user reports and some documented conditions around them, so treat this section as guidance, not a rule.
One customer review on JP Gaming’s Zero page says the pad felt wrong at first and stopped bothering the reviewer after about 40 to 50 minutes. That is one person’s account, and it describes getting used to the feel. It does not prove the surface changes.
So give a new pad time before judging it, and choose the base and size carefully, because exchanging it may be hard.
Stock, restocks and waiting lists
We found no official Artisan waiting list. What we did find is a patchwork of sellers and import listings.
Artisan’s own site carries a notice that US orders may be subject to tariffs and duties, and a notice about paused orders to several Middle East countries, as of the date of this guide. Many Amazon listings for the Hien and Zero are labeled Japan imports. A European retailer’s Zero XL SOFT page showed the item unavailable with a notify-me button. We do not publish current stock, because it changes.
If your exact size and base is unavailable, use the retailer’s notification option rather than switching to a different variant. A pad one hardness step away will feel different.
How GameVexo chose
Evidence basis: This guide is research-based. GameVexo has not handled, tested or measured any pad in it.
What came from documentation: Sizes, thickness and base options come from Artisan retailer pages and Amazon listings. Artisan’s construction description comes from its own site.
Independent evidence: Speed classes come from retailer descriptions and buying guides, named in the table above. None are GameVexo measurements.
How picks are chosen: We picked five Ninja FX models that cover control, hybrid and speed surfaces, each with a clear role for a different reader. Price, ratings and sales rank were not used.
Buying Guide — What to Look For
Four decisions cover most of the choice.
Start with speed class
Low-sensitivity, whole-arm aimers usually want control. Players who flick a lot may prefer a hybrid or the Raiden. This is an editorial rule of thumb.
Pick a base hardness
MID is firmer and faster, SOFT is balanced, and XSOFT is the most cushioned. If wrist comfort is your main goal, see our best ergonomic mouse pad: wrist support that works.
Check size and exact variant
Artisan sells several sizes per model. The Type-99 table lists M, L, XL and XXL. If you need desk coverage, see the best full-desk mouse pad: xl and xxl picks.
Plan for adjustment and returns
Read the return terms before you open the pad.
